Posture and the Aging Process
It’s not about NOW, it’s about what your bad posture is going to cost you in the FUTURE. Recent research has determined posture is much more than how you look! It affects how you feel, your ability to function AND is a predictor of the likelihood you will require assistance from others as you age. There are multiple published studies which go into great detail about the effects of poor posture and the increased likelihood of dependence in ADLs as we age which means, if your posture is bad and getting worse, you’re going to end up in an assisted living home depending on others to help you get around and complete even the most basic tasks. What are you doing on a daily basis to improve and maintain your posture.
If you haven’t had your posture checked and don’t have a daily regimen to maintain your posture, it’s inevitable that your posture isn’t getting better. The average American spends over 5 hours a day, hunched over their computers, damaging their posture. This number doesn’t even count the time spent on social media on phones, tablets and laptops.
If the current healthcare model is followed: OTC (over the counter) NSAIDs then prescription opioids then injections … and then surgery. No one will be able to live pain-free, active, independent lives. If you went to a dentist, you wouldn’t expect them to prescribe ibuprofen for a tooth ache. You’d expect a complete exam, x-rays followed by correction of the problem. If you have muscular aches and pains that are persistent, masking the symptoms with ibuprofen and other meds is just a short-term fix leading to long-term problems. Masking any symptoms, no matter how mild, only works for so long before a little problem becomes bigger and bigger and then leads to a CRISIS.
In a recent study published in the Frontiers of Aging in 2016, there was a direct link between poor posture and recall ability. Older adults with poor posture (stooped posture) performed poorly on memory tests when compared with adults who had upright posture. Both your MENTAL and PHYSICAL well-being are directly affected by your posture.
Posture is an external expression of internal mechanics.
